MIRADOURO DA SERRETA
Between dark water and sky, rises a territory in the form of a permanently changing elipse, called Terceira. This island has a complex volcanic origin, which has contributed to the preservation of many species of its fauna and flora. Its rich vegetation coverage, natural and endemic, the altitude and the hilly land offer unique landscapes that reveal the most intimate relationship between the land and the blues of the sky and the sea, asking us for architecture to connect with nature, to improve the life of the environment, ecosystems and men.
The classics described nature with four basic elements: fire, earth, air and water. The four roots that, according to Empédocles, remain unchangeable after all possible interactions, that never stop being what they are. The project proposes not just a route generated by a functional barrier, but a test of the limits of the connection of a human enterprise to the four elements of nature. On this path, those four axes and their imaginary, arise.
The material used is carbonized wood, a way of preserving wood with fire, known as shou sugi ban, that refers us to the history of these volcanic lands, and naturally co-exists with the surroundings. It`s more climate resistant, longer lasting, maintenance free and does not use toxins or chemicals. A conscious choice of materials and a preservation of natural environments allows to capture the carbon, what is essential for the environment.
